Supporting Positive Behavior in Children & Teen...

A child does not want to leave the toy store, so he stops and flops. Another bolts across a busy parking lot, turns and smiles at his mom. An eighteen-year-old student bursts into tears when asked to change activities at school. Sound familiar? These and other common behaviour issues in children with Down syndrome can quickly become engrained and may even persist into adulthood. No parent wants that to happen, and thankfully, help is available! Dr David Stein, a psychologist and Co-Director of the Down Syndrome Program at Boston Childrens Hospital, shares his approach to behaviour management in this new book for parents. The book examines how the brain of a person with Down syndrome works, how those differences impact behaviour, and why bad behaviour should not be viewed as a wilful act. Governed by this new awareness, parents are in a better position to change and manage their childs behaviour using these guiding principles: Be proactive, not reactive. Be consistent. Use visual schedules and Social Stories to direct behaviour. Develop a token reward chart. Keep gut reactions in check. Teach siblings to ignore bad behaviour. Learn effective disciplinary techniques. Know when professional help is needed. Some of these parenting concepts are intuitive, others are not, but when they are followed consistently, children and teens with Down syndrome do their best behaviourally and the parent-child relationship remains as positive and loving as it should be.

This is the autobiography of a Cuban refugee who immigrated to the United States in 1962 and decided to make Boston, Massachusetts, home for his family and future generations. He starts his life chronicle the day he, after much hassle with the abusive customs officers at Havana's International Airport, who do everything they can to ruin his life, finally lands in Miami, Florida. With no knowledge of the English language but a lot of hope and ambition, this young man, who as a child suffered a mild case of troubling Tourette's syndrome, starts by telling us his parents' history and dedication in a small town in Cuba and his own growth as a student abused intellectually for his ideas at a Jesuit high school. While in Boston he becomes the first Latino Boston banking executive and community leader, and eventually he takes much desired position as a college professor of information systems and holds six college degrees - one in Freudian psychoanalysis. He is also a bilingual newspaper columnist and writer and publisher of 10 Kindle books - all while raising a family of two children and five grandchildren. 1. Language: English. This week on The Best of Car Talk, Leonard Bernstein is immortalized in automotive lore for a shifting technique he handed down to his son. Elsewhere, Adla got a rude welcome to Boston when someone stole the battery from her Civic; Jennifer made an ill-advised bet on steering wheels with her know-it-all 18-year-old nephew; Esther's low coolant light and buzzer might be trying to send her a subtle signal about the state of her cooling system; and is John's Thunderbird suffering from Radio Frequency Interference or Dying Transmission Syndrome? All this and lots more, this week on The Best of Car Talk. [Broadcast Date: September 17, 2016] 1. Language: English. Narrator: Tom Magliozzi, Ray Magliozzi. The astonishing, Job-like story of how an existence filled with loss, suffering, questioning, and anger became a life filled with shocking and incomprehensible peace and joy.Vaneetha Risner contracted polio as an infant, was misdiagnosed, and lived with widespread paralysis. She lived in and out of the hospital for ten years and, after each stay, would return to a life filled with bullying. When she became a Christian, though, she thought things would get easier, and they did: carefree college days, a dream job in Boston, and an MBA from Stanford where she met and married a classmate. But life unraveled. Again. She had four miscarriages. Her son died because of a doctor's mistake. And Vaneetha was diagnosed with post-polio syndrome, meaning she would likely become a quadriplegic. And then her husband betrayed her and moved out, leaving her to raise two adolescent daughters alone. This was not the abundant life she thought God had promised her. But, as Vaneetha discovered, everything she experienced was designed to draw her closer to Christ as she discovered "that intimacy with God in suffering can be breathtakingly beautiful."

When his beloved Ginny succumbed to an unusual cancer, his campaign became even more bitterly personal. Now Matt has identified two bizarre cases of what he has dubbed the Belinda Syndrome - caused, he is certain, by the mine's careless disposal of toxic chemicals. There's no one quite like Matt McClowry. An awkward, gentle soul trapped in a hulking physique, Matt has been surprising audiences for nearly a decade, putting a sharp edge to universal topics like family, relationships, and modern life. Born and raised outside of Detroit, Michigan, Matt McClowry began his pursuit of a stand-up career in 2004 by signing up for a local open-mic night, and his comedy has taken off from there. Over the past 10 years, he has built up both his confidence and his writing skills, and he now enjoys a reputation as one of the strongest acts in the Midwest. Part of what gives Matt's comedy a truly unique edge is the fact that he is a high-functioning individual with Asperger's syndrome. Matt does not fit the stereotypical picture of someone with Asperger's, and fans often question him on that point. He finds himself to be much more comfortable onstage than offstage. One common symptom of Asperger's syndrome is not recognizing humor, and despite being a professional comedian, McClowry is not immune to struggling with that. He has found ways to push past this obstacle and uses Asperger's to influence his career in a positive way. There have been many highlights in Matt's career so far. He has performed at the Boston Comedy Festival, Gilda's LaughFest, The Laughing Skull Comedy Festival, and The Bridgetown Comedy Festival. He was a winner at The World Series of Comedy; he has performed at the Oddball Comedy Festival, opened for Whitney Cummings and Marc Maron, and appeared with Bill Burr at Flappers Comedy Club in Los Angeles. He has been seen on Comcast Television and been heard on Sirius XM Radio. Matt continues to travel and perform and broaden his exposure. Dry and dark like a good merlot, Matt's comedy is refreshingly honest and brutally funny. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Matt McClowry. From The Sisterhood, Michael Palmer's first New York Times best seller, to The Patient, his ninth, reviewers have proclaimed him a master of medical suspense. Recognized around the world for original, topical, nail-biting suspense, emergency physician Palmer's work has been translated into more than 35 languages. Now he reaches controversial and startling new heights in a terrifying tale of cutting-edge microbiology, unbridled greed, and murder, where either knowing too little or trusting too much can be FATAL. One of the most anticipated books of 2018 - Esquire, Elle, Nylon, Huffington Post, The Boston Globe, The Rumpus, GoodReads, The Millions, BookRiot, Bustle, The Week. "Smart, funny, and true in all the best ways, this book made me ache with recognition." - Cheryl Strayed A raw, funny, and fiercely honest account of becoming a mother before feeling like a grown up. When Meaghan O'Connell got accidentally pregnant in her twenties and decided to keep the baby, she realized that the book she needed - a brutally honest, agenda-free reckoning with the emotional and existential impact of motherhood - didn't exist. So she decided to write it herself. And Now We Have Everything is O'Connell's exploration of the cataclysmic, impossible-to-prepare-for experience of becoming a mother. With her dark humor and hair-trigger B.S. detector, O'Connell addresses the pervasive imposter syndrome that comes with unplanned pregnancy, the fantasies of a "natural" birth experience that erode maternal self-esteem, post-partum body and sex issues, and the fascinating strangeness of stepping into a new, not-yet-comfortable identity. Channeling fears and anxieties that are still taboo and often unspoken, And Now We Have Everything is an unflinchingly frank, funny, and visceral motherhood story for our times, about having a baby and staying, for better or worse, exactly yourself. 1.
