Nipah Virus Infection : A Newly Emerging Disease

The Nipah infection is just one of over 40 new diseases that have emerged since the 1970s. Nipah virus (NiV) disease is a newly discovered infection of swine and humans that emerged in Malaysia in September 1998. The epidemic started in the northern Malaysian state of Perak and the disease was named after Kampung Sungai Nipah (Nipah River Village) where the first viral isolate was obtained (Chua et al., 1999). NiV causes severe illness, characterized by inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) or respiratory diseases. Respiratory signs predominate in pigs, that develop fever, nasal discharge, rapid and labored respiration with a notable, harsh non-producible cough, giving rise to the name "barking cough syndrome / one mile cough syndrome". It can cause significant economic losses to farmers. Other domestic animals like cats and dogs shown to be infected with Nipah virus (Hooper et al., 2001).Need to reinforce the improve preventive measures which include education of healthcare workers, veterinarians, and other first responders about infection control procedures and expanding the surveillance and laboratory capacity for rapid diagnosis of henipavirus in high risk areas.

Metabolic Syndrome among Nurses

Nurses who are mostly shift workers were found to be at risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). A cross sectional study was conducted among 404 female nurses working in a teaching hospital in Kelantan, Malaysia to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its associated factors. Data were collected using a proforma consisted of sociodemographic data, occupational history, physical activity and DASS 42 questionnaire (validated Malay version). Anthropometric, blood pressure measurement and fasting venous blood were taken from each subject for fasting lipid profile and blood sugar. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 24.3% (95% CI: 20.1, 28.4). The significant factors associated with metabolic syndrome were total duration of employment (years) and one way commuting time to work (minutes). High prevalence of metabolic syndrome indicates that nurses are occupational high risk group for CHD. Occupational factors which significantly associated with metabolic syndrome in this study are total duration of employment and one way commuting time to work, however there is no significant relationship between metabolic syndrome and shift work as well as self-perceived job stress.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is an important health issue affecting reproductive women today. Apart from being the most common endocrinopathy, it is also one of the leading causes of infertility. Whilst, Metabolic Syndrome (MS) is a syndrome comprises of multiple risk factors that predispose someone to the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Worldwide, there are many studies looking into the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome (MS) either in general or in specific population. This study specifically looked on the prevalence of MS among Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). It also looked into the associated factors which determine the MS prevalence among PCOS population. It is a cross sectional study, involving 106 PCOS patients attending Gynaecology clinic. The diagnostic criteria used for MS was IDF 2005. The prevalence of MS among PCOS patients studied was 43.4%. Age and family history of Diabetes Mellitus are the two important determinant factors for MS.
